AIA 201
Digital Library AIA Table Top Reprographic Workstation

Specific Application
Reflective art digital file size up to 53MB, 3750X 5,000 (RBG) pixels

System Components

System Design

This entry level system is designed for maximum throughput (20 - 60 scans per hour depending on material handling variables), reliability and ease of use. The BetterLight 4000E camera back offers control by scan line rate and ISO and features ViewFinder software with AIAXact preset and manual tonal curves designed for academic use. The BetterLight 4000E back is also upgradeable to as high as 12,000X15,990 pixels 549MB (RGB). The copy stand features vibration-free construction, flicker-free fluorescent lighting, and a APO lens to eliminate any color fringing. Equally, the 4X5 bellows camera has exact gearing, easy focus controls, and an AIAXact Live View Mirror system that allows for constant live view of the ground glass back even when the camera is at its highest position on the column. Focus is measured on the monitor as a digital numerical readout, an analogue display and an audible tone.

This is the AIA recommended "workhorse" package for a desktop entry-level system for situations where work/study students, volunteers, or other staffing issues may lead to a high attrition rate and necessitate repeated retraining sessions.

AIA 202
Digital Library 23.5" x 31.5" Reprographic Workstation

AIA 205
Horizontal Digital Library System for Artwork 40"X 60" or Larger

Specific Application
Horizontal capture of reflective art up to 40" X 60" or above to custom specifications. Digital file size up to 12,000 X15,990 MB (24 Bit RGB) up to 549MB file sizes. Very large posters, maps, blueprints, drawings, un-framed art

System Components

  • BetterLight//AI Super 8000 K-2 HS
  • AIAXact Vacuum Easel in Weighted Free Standing Frame
  • Floor Mounted and Leveled Dolly Tracks to Custom Specification Installed to Optical Center
  • AIAXact Dolly Track System
  • Betterlight//AI 4 x 5 Wide Angle Copy Camera
  • Rodenstock APO Lens
  • NorthLight HID Copy Lights (No Heat, Energy Saving Lights)
  • On-site Installation and Training

System Design
This solution is designed for precision capture of very large artwork, posters and maps.

Advantages of a horizontal copy setup are:
  1. Nothing can fall on the artwork
  2. Canvas paintings on stretchers will remain much flatter when mounted vertically (for horizontal copying) than when mounted horizontally, where the center tends to sag relative to the edges.
  3. Larger originals can be accommodated with appropriate focal-length lenses -- no need for performance-limiting wide-angle lenses, which have more fall-off and chromatic aberrations.
  4. Easier to deploy (arrange) the lighting, both for standard copy work and for special illumination for certain originals -- artwork is viewed the same way it normally is (on the "wall").
  5. Easier to see the results of lighting and camera setup, and adjust the camera -- camera is not way up high.

Disadvantages of a horizontal copy setup:
  1. May require more space than a vertical copy stand.
  2. May be more subject to vibration between subject and camera than a vertical copy stand.
  3. More hands (people) may be needed to place art on stand.

The Horizontal design allows the use of higher millimeter lens than could be used on a vertical copy stand due to the limitations of column size. Therefore, there is less fall-off on the edges of the art work. However, the unique design of the AIAXact Vacuum Easel and its free standing frame, allow it to be tilted 90 degrees so that art is positioned with the same ease as on a vertical copy stand. Once in position, the frame is rotated back to its original position and locked in. A set of camera dolly rails, used in motion picture production, holds a dolly with a camera stand and head bolted on. The BetterLight//AI Super 8 K-2 Back inserted into the BetterLight Copy Camera can now slide up and down the rail which has been installed to precise parallel position and optical center to the easel. Of course, this system is custom designed and lighting and positioning of the lighting must be to specification.
